CHUNG Heemin studied Painting at Hongik University, and earned an MFA in Sculpture at the National University of Arts. Starting with the artist¡¯s first solo exhibition ¡¶Yesterday¡¯s Blues¡· (Projectspace Sarubiadabang, 2016), the artist has been interested in the strategy of creating digital images that feature volatile elements such as images from games, advertisements, 3D objects and more. In a world that is recognized first as an image, rather than a physical reality, she ponders questions such as ¡®how do we sense reality¡¯, or ¡®is the word identity valid¡¯, and thinks about mutable language, and cognitive methods through the medium of painting. In addition, she continuously questions the meaning that paintings or materials can have in a present world that is drowned in devices. She has experimented with the properties of acrylic paint, and has researched a way of representing a sense of space when different materials are encountered on the screen.
During the residency, the artist will prepare for her solo exhibition, and create paintings that utilize the medium of acrylic more actively in which she hopes to communicate a form of ¡®processed liveliness¡¯. In addition, she questions ways to present painting conditionally by combining it with other paintings and other mediums such as light or video.
